What's New About Trademark Registration in Ukraine This Year?

Registering a trademark in Ukraine has become noticeably faster, more digital and more convenient over the past year – especially for foreign applicants. Here are the key practical improvements we see in our own work.

1. Shorter Registration Timelines

The most visible change is speed. Until recently, the full registration cycle took roughly 18–24 months. Based on our observations over the past year, the timeline for applications that pass examination smoothly (with no office actions or oppositions) has shortened to around 16 months.

This is a practical trend rather than a guaranteed statutory term: the actual timeline depends on the office workload, the number of classes, the type of sign and any examination objections. But the overall direction is clear – from filing to registration is now typically closer than it was a year ago.

2. E-Filing and an Online Personal Account

Applications can be filed online through UANIPIO’s e-filing system by registering a personal account, through which all subsequent correspondence on the application is handled. E-filing is not only more convenient but also cheaper: it carries a reduced official fee compared with paper filing. The current status of an application (formal examination, substantive examination, publication, certificate issued) can be tracked online.

3. Power of Attorney: a Properly Executed Scan Is Enough

A point of real practical value for representation, especially of foreign clients: there is no need to wait for the paper original of the power of attorney to arrive by post. A properly executed power of attorney can be submitted as a scanned copy, which saves meaningful time at the outset – the application can proceed without waiting for cross-border courier delivery of documents.

4. Electronic Certificates

A trademark certificate is now issued in electronic form: once payment is confirmed in the online cabinet, UANIPIO sends an electronic certificate and records the start of the protection term. A paper original, if needed, is prepared and sent only upon a separate request. For businesses this means faster receipt of the title and easier portfolio administration.

5. Ukrainian Data Now Live in EUIPO’s TMview

As of 22 October 2025, data on nearly 600,000 trademarks registered or filed in Ukraine became available in EUIPO’s global TMview search platform, which brings together over 134 million marks from 80 IP offices worldwide. Access to TMview is free.

✅ Why this matters in practice For businesses it means simpler and faster clearance: you can now check for similar signs in Ukraine using the same tool used for EU and other jurisdictions. For brands it is also a step toward greater transparency and visibility of Ukrainian marks abroad, and a signal of the Ukrainian IP system aligning with European digital standards.

6. Potentially Perpetual Protection

Not new, but useful for planning: a certificate is valid for 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed for successive ten-year terms an unlimited number of times. With timely payment of fees, a trademark can remain protected indefinitely.
