The establishment of Intellectual Property High Court will be instrumental to the development of knowledge-based economy which is very important nowadays, – noted Dovydas Vitkauskas, Team Leader of the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine, at a round table “Competition to the Intellectual Property High Court: expectations of participants”. The event was organised in Kyiv by the EU Project and Ukrainian Bar Association.
“We should gain a momentum and intensify our work on establishing the IP Court with assistance from the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine,” – stressed Sergiy Kozyakov, Head of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine, – “This is an unprecedented step for Ukraine, which is based on best comparative practices in advanced jurisdictions. IP courts have proved to be effective in the countries where they were established”.
The EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” is developing testing database for the selection of candidates. The court is expected to become operational from 2018.
According to Zenoviy Kholodnyuk, Head of the State Court Administration of Ukraine, UAH 29 mln are included in the state budget for establishing the IP court. The monthly salary will be equivalent to 30 minimum salaries. The IP Court will consist of at least 21 judges, and some 100 staff.
“Specialisation of the Ukrainian judiciary in intellectual property matters will help not only to better resolve outstanding disputes, but should also increase the investor confidence and foster the country’s international economic relations” – said Dovydas Vitkauskas, Team Leader of the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”.
